Massage Therapy

Massage is one of the oldest healing arts, dating back 3000 years in Chinese history.  Today, the benefits of massage are varied and far-reaching.  Massage therapy has proven beneficial for many chronic conditions, including lower back pain, arthritis, bursitis, fatigue, high blood pressure, diabetes, immunity suppression, and more.  As so many of us already know, massage also helps relieve the stress and tension of everyday living.

When choosing a type of massage, know what's best for you.  Do you want a gentle, serene experience, or would you like more pressure? Don't be afraid to communicate with your therapist about the technique you prefer and be sure to inform them of any medical conditions or concerns you have.  If you are uncomfortable at any point during the massage, let the therapist know.  Drink plenty of water before and after your massage to flush out the toxins that massage loosens up.

And just how often should you have a massage? That's easy - ask your RMT for their recommendation.  Most company health benefit plans cover massage therapy.

Massage types available:

Swedish massage

This type of massage uses a system of long, gliding strokes, kneading and percussion, and tapping techniques on the more superficial layers of muscles.  This technique results in generalized relaxation.

Neuromuscular massage

Trigger point massage and myotherapy are varieties of neuromuscular massage which applies concentrated pressure on trigger points of pain and passive stretching of specific muscles.

Deep tissue massage

This approach is used to alleviate chronic muscle pain by reaching deeper muscles in problem areas.

Sports Injury Management

This technique is similar to deep tissue massage but more specifically adapted to deal with the needs of athletes.  It is often used before or after athletic events as part of an athlete's training to promote healing.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a Japanese "hands on" healing art based on traditional oriental healing principles and modern anatomy and physiology theory.  Literally translated as "finger pressure", Shiatsu consists of simple movements and pressure applied to the acupuncture meridians and points of the body, which is why it has been called "acupuncture without needles".

Suikodo(TM)

Suikodo(TM) is an innovative form of manual medicine developed by Shiatsu Master Mitsuki Kikkawa. It includes precise palpatory and observation-based assessment techniques, as well as treatment techniques such as meridian stretches, Shiatsu-style direct pressure, Neuromeridian Stimulation (NMS), and energy-based techniques.
Suikodo(TM) posits that the body's innate wisdom can be interpreted through direct feedback from the body.  Using the information, the therapist can determine the appropriate type and amount of stimulus to be applied to obtain healing.

Manual lymph drainage massage

This approach improves the flow of lymph fluid with rhythmic strokes and is used primarily in conditions with poor lymph flow, such as edema.

Pregnancy Massage

Massage therapy encourages a healthy, full-term pregnancy while allowing women to sleep better through the night.  Massage treatments are customized on an individual basis and specific conditions and complaints will be addressed.
Massage therapy can relieve muscle pain including back and sciatic discomfort; help the body adjust to a changing shape and weight distribution; and prepare the body for labour by consciously learning to release tension and by practicing breathing, focus, and relaxation techniques during massage.
If you are interested in remembering the joy of pregnancy through the art of body casting, visit
Love's Memory for details.

Infant Massage

Adults are not the only ones who benefit from massage therapy: bonding with your infant can be enhanced through the touch of massage. Infants respond rapidly and positively to the treatments. With regular treatments, studies have shown that massage therapy improves growth and development, as well as increased weight and decreased hospital time for pre-term babies. Infants who receive regular massage treatments tend to eat better, sleep well, be less fussy and more mentally and socially active, and have decreased cortisol levels which implies less stress, making them overall happier babies.
Genesis also offers infant massage workshops for parents. Call 905 607-0262 for more information.

Physical Therapy Services

Chiropractic & Physiotherapy Services

Chiropractic works because you are self-healing and regulated by your nervous system.  Impulses flow from your brain and down your spinal cord.  Pairs of nerve roots branch off from between each spinal joint.  These nerves link your brain with every cell and tissue of your body.  Because of their close proximity to the moving bones of the spine, improper motion or position of spinal bones can irritate and compromise nerve function.  Chiropractic care locates these areas and helps reduce their effect with spinal adjustments.  Health often returns with restored nervous system control of your body.

Chiropractic helps millions with lower back pain, golfer's and tennis elbow, arthritis/bursitis, neck pain, allergies, asthma, carpal tunnel, digestive problems, disc problems, headaches, hip/leg pain, hyperactivity, infantile colic, plantar fasciitis, pregnancy aches and pains, pre-menstrual syndrome, sciatica, scoliosis, shoulder/arm pain, sinus trouble, stiffness, and stress or fatigue.

Frequently Asked Questions about Chiropractic:

Do I have a slipped disc?
A disc can't slip, because of the way it attaches to the spinal bones above and below it.  However, a disc can bulge, tear, herniate, thin, dry out, or collapse irritating nearby nerve tissue.

Do I have a pinched nerve?
It's more likely that a spinal bone is stretching, rubbing, or chafing a nerve.  These "subluxations" can distort the nerve messages between the brain and the body, producing unhealthy changes to affected organs and tissues.

How long until I feel better?
Some patients experience almost instant relief.  Others discover it can take weeks or months.  Many factors affect the healing process.  Within a week or so, most patients see enough progress to encourage them to complete our recommendations.

How long will I need chiropractic care?
Some patients rely on chiropractic to help manage episodes of spinal problems.  Others include chiropractic as part of a plan of ongoing wellness care.  How long you benefit from care is up to you.

Active Release Technique (ART)

ART is a patented, state-of-the-art soft tissue technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves.  Conditions that can be resolved quickly with ART include headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, shin splints, sciatica and back pain.
These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.  The ART provider uses her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and nerves.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a form of natural healing which originated within the oldest healing methods known to humanity, Traditional Chinese Medicine.  Acupuncture can affect the movement of energy or "Vital Force" circulating through well-defined passageways called meridians.  For a variety of reasons, energy flow may become impaired, producing symptoms of pain, dysfunction or general loss of well-being.

How does Acupuncture work?
Key points on the meridians are painlessly stimulated with very fine needles.  Freeing blockages balances the body's energy as it flows to the organs, glands, muscles, nerves and blood.  When the quality of energy changes, the symptoms associated with the lack of flow will gradually improve.

Biomedical Acupuncture
Medical acupuncture is acupuncture that has been successfully incorporated into medical or allied health practices in Western countries.  It is derived from Asian and European sources, and is practiced in both pure and hybrid forms.  Therapeutic insertion of solid needles in various combinations and patterns is the foundation of medical acupuncture.  The choice of needle patterns can be based on traditional principles such as encouraging the flow of a subtle vivifying energy called qi (pronounced "chee"); on modern concepts such as recruiting neuroanatomical activities in segmental distributions; or on a combination of these two principles.  The adaptability of classical and hybrid acupuncture approaches in Western medical environments is the key to their clinical success and popular appeal.

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture

Sometimes known as an "Acupuncture Facelift", Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture is more than a cosmetic procedure, it is a process that revitalizes the whole body and can help you look and feel younger.  It is a painless, non-surgical method that reduces the signs of the aging process.

Practitioners of Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture study underlying factors that contribute to the aging process.  Using principles based on Oriental medicine, hair-thin needles are inserted along channels or meridians where vital energy, called qi (pronounced "chee"), flows.

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture improves the vitality of the face, erasing the appearance of years of aging.  Results are apparent after just a few treatments.  Some of the benefits include helping to eliminate fine lines and diminish wrinkles, reducing sagging of the skin and bags under the eyes, improving collagen production, tightening pores and improving acne.

On average a series will consist of 12 treatments.  Although the response differs according to the individual's prior condition as well as their current lifestyle, a noticeable effect is usually seen by about the sixth session.  To prolong the final results, maintenance care is recommended following the initial course of treatments.  As well, self-massage or self-applied acupressure, application of skin care products, and herbal or nutritional supplements in conjunction with a healthy diet and lifestyle will help sustain the effect.  For more information and pricing, please call us at
(905) 607-0262.

Orthotics

Frequently Asked Questions

What are "orthotics"?

Orthotics (orthoses) are specially-prepared foot supports. These anatomically molded devices, worn under the heel and arch of your foot to correct skeletal anomalies, do more than "support" your feet. They actually realign them to a natural, "neutral" position to relieve foot, leg and back stress, increase endurance, restore critical balance, improve sports performance, alleviate foot fatigue and prevent a wide range of foot problems.

How do I know if I need orthotics?

You definitely need orthotics if:
   (1)   You participate in any activity that places stress on your feet.
   (2)   You have an obvious imbalance that causes such symptoms as flat or high arched feet.
   (3)   You have external malalignments such as bow knees, knock knees, pigeon-toes, or "duck feet."
   (4)   You've already developed chronic foot problems, ranging from corns and calluses to arch pain and heel spur pain.
   (5)   Your job requires being on your feet for extended periods of time.

How can orthotics improve sports performance?

Athletics make demands on the feet not encountered in normal daily activity. Slight imbalances in the foot not dangerous or detectable under everyday circumstances may render you vulnerable to injury with the extra stress of sports activity. By eliminating the need for your muscles to compensate for these "hidden" imbalances, orthotics reduce fatigue and promote the kind of efficient "muscle memory" that's crucial to outstanding performance. By aiding your control of foot movement, custom-fitted orthotics also maximize the biomechanical function not only of your feet but of your legs and torso, as well. The difference is often noticed almost immediately, giving you the kind of increased agility, balance, and sure-footed response you never knew were in you.

Do orthotics help people with high arches?

Yes. If you have a "cavus" foot (on with high arches), a functional orthotic will provide a greater contact area for you foot and spread the weight-bearing surface more evenly. This can contribute to the healing of calluses in the foot (hyperdupination), improving control and lateral stability.

 What causes foot problems?

The primary cause of foot problems and related conditions is skeletal imbalance. Most people have some degree of hyperpronation (flat feet) or hypersupination (high arches). These structural imperfections cause a certain amount of instability during foot function, subjecting the foot to excessive stress and stain that can eventually cause pain and deformities. The greater the imbalance, the earlier these symptoms will become evident a greater their intensity. Orthotics compensate for the inherent imbalances in the foot, improving function and relieving or preventing the appearance of such symptoms.

Does excess weight cause or aggravate foot problems?

Definitely. Additional stress to feet magnifies existing imbalances and increases symptoms. Anyone with a weight problem can benefit from orthotics.

Can foot imbalances cause leg, knee, hip, and back pain - and can orthotics help?

Yes. Poor skeletal structure in the feet puts stress on the entire skeletal system and reduces shock absorption. That's why you will hear people say, "When my feet hurt, I hurt all over." Orthotics, by improving foot function, can relieve stress in the ankles, legs, knees, hips, and back.

Do orthotics have any effect on my posture?

Yes. Imbalances in your feet can distort the skeletal architecture of your entire body. While orthotic foot supports will not make a marked improvement in everyone's posture, they may eliminate posture problems caused by your feet.

Laser Therapy for Pain Management and Control

What is pain?

Pain is your body's way of telling you that something is wrong. While it is normal for your body to send pain signals when you are injured or ill, pain that lingers after an illness or injury is not normal. With chronic pain, the pain continues for weeks, months, or years after you recover. Pain that continues for 3 months or longer is considered chronic. Some people develop chronic pain out of the blue, with no injury or illness to trigger pain signals.  Chronic pain can occur anywhere in your body and can range from mild and annoying to pain so severe that it interferes with your mood and ability to function.

Anyone can develop chronic pain.  Although it is more common in older adults, it is not a part of normal aging.  Older adults are more likely to have long-term medical conditions linked to ongoing pain, such as diabetes or arthritis.

What causes chronic pain?

The cause of chronic pain is not clear.  It is possible that certain brain neurotransmitters that usually suppress pain (e.g Endorphin and Serotonin) may not work properly.  Chronic pain occurs when pain signals continue after you recover from an illness or injury.  It can also develop without a known trigger.

Common symptoms of chronic pain include:

  - Mild to severe pain that does not go away in an expected amount of time.
  - Pain that may be described as shooting, burning, aching, or electrical.
  - Discomfort, soreness, tightness, or stiffness.

Over time, pain can lead to fatigue, depression, and withdrawal from social and physical activities. The emotional distress may make your pain worse. Your immune system may weaken, leading to frequent infections and illness. You may have so much pain that you become unable to go to work or school or to function in your daily life.

How is chronic pain diagnosed and treated?

Chronic pain is usually diagnosed by your medical history. Your health professional will ask about your past illnesses and your overall health. He or she will also give you a physical exam. Before a diagnosis is made, tests may be done to rule out or identify other conditions that can cause pain. These tests may include a neurological exam, blood tests, and a mental health assessment. In most cases, test results are normal, making it difficult to know the exact cause of the pain. This does not mean that your pain is not real.

Mild or occasional pain can be treated with drugless, non-invasive methods. Exercising, using correct body posture/body mechanic, getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet,  and trying complementary therapies such as chiropractic manipulation, massage and yoga may help reduce chronic pain.  In addition, counseling may help you cope with the pain and with common reactions you might have to it such as frustration, fear, anger, depression, and anxiety. Chronic pain often can be successfully managed so that your quality of life significantly improves.

If the pain persists or becomes more severe then other more invasive methods can be used.  These include use of  nonprescription pain relievers such as acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), prescription medications such as narcotics, acupuncture, injections of local anesthetic, and surgery.

What is Laser Therapy?

The word "laser" is an acronym for 'Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation'.  There are two types of medical lasers.  The Therapeutic (low-level) laser is used to stimulate tissue repair through a process of bio-stimulation.  High powered lasers are used for surgical procedures.  Doctors and scientists around the world have been using low level laser light to treat many conditions which affect all age groups.
Laser therapy is the application of red and near infrared light over injuries or wounds to improve soft tissue healing and relieve both acute and chronic pain.  Low-level Laser light uses cold laser light energy to direct bio-stimulative light energy to the body's cells without injuring or damaging them in any way.  The therapy is precise and accurate, offering safe and effective treatments for a wide variety of conditions, including:

Naturopathy

Benefits of Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine is a unique and comprehensive approach to improving health, diagnosing and treating illness, and preventing disease.  It encompasses treating each person as an individual, healing the whole self (including physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects), and addressing the root cause of the illness.
Naturopathic medicine is regulated by the Board of Drugless Therapies - Naturopathy (BDDT-N) and is a four year post-graduate educational program taught at accredited naturopathic medical schools.

What can I expect when I visit the Naturopathic Doctor (ND)?

The Naturopathic Doctor's goal is to understand you, the patient, and all the factors that impact your health.  The first visit is 1 1/2 hours and involves an in-depth patient intake including your chief concern, personal and family history, and a complete review of systems.  The second visit is one hour and involves a thorough head-to-toe physical exam.  Depending on the concern/condition, the acute or chronic nature, and the results of the physical exam and laboratory tests, the naturopath will design a unique treatment plan for you.  The treatment my include a combination of nutritional and lifestyle counseling, herbal/nutraceutical supplementation, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, or physical therapy.

Health problems treated with Naturopathic Medicine:

People of all ages, with virtually all chronic and most acute conditions, may benefit from naturopathic medical treatment.  The most common health conditions treated by naturopathy include:

Chronic Illnesses: constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, allergies, asthma, arthritis, hypertension, eczema, psoriasis, acne, cystitis, proctitis, impotence, and cancer.

Acute Conditions: colds, flu, ear and throat infections, headaches, and migraines.

Women's Conditions: menopausal problems, PMS, menstrual disorders, fibrocystic breast disease, enhancing health in pregnancy, infertility, endometriosis, and uterine fibroids.

Other: weight loss, stress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

The Six Principles of Naturopathic Medicine:

 1. Tolle Causam: To identify and to remove the underlying causes of illness, rather than merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.
 2. Primum Non Nocere: First, do no harm - use methods and medicines that minimize the risk of harmful side effects, and acknowledge, respect and work with the individual's self-healing process.
 3. Docere: The doctor as teacher - knowledge and encouragement are integral in self-responsibility for health.
 4. Treat the whole person - treat each person by taking into account individual physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental and social factors.
 5. Emphasize prevention - by assessing risk factors, heredity and susceptibility to disease and making appropriate interventions to prevent illness.
 6.

Vis Medicatrix Naturae: To recognize and utilize the healing power of nature, and identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery.

Is Naturopathic Medicine safe?

The safety record of naturopathic medicine is excellent.  This makes sense given the emphasis on non-toxic, natural source medicines and gentle, non-invasive treatments.  Side effects are rare, and contraindications between naturopathic remedies and conventional medicines are accounted for throughout the naturopathic treatment.

Pilates

The Pilates method is a fitness technique that helps tone and align the body, developing strength and flexibility and improving posture.  It was developed by its founder, Joseph Pilates (1880-1967).  Each of the 39 mat-work exercises in the syllabus is structured so as to develop long, lean muscles and to improve core strength, co-ordination, and body awareness.  It also encourages proper use of breathing while exercising, thereby minimizing needless strain on the neck and back, by working with your body and not against it.  This method of strength conditioning has been used by many individuals for the purpose of rehabilitation and injury prevention.

Pilates works muscle systems, counterbalancing the systems against each other.  Pilates exercises require stabilization with some muscles while others are moving bones.  Pilates focuses on good posture, joint release, flexibility and strength.  Pilates also helps to accomplish everyday tasks with ease and mobility, i.e. functional movement rather than developing strength just for its own sake.
